At Purbrook Park School we are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress of all our pupils, regardless of their needs or abilities. Our Learning Support team provide a secure, yet challenging environment where pupils will achieve their full potential, regardless of any difficulty they may have in accessing the curriculum.
We use our best endeavours to secure special educational provision for pupils for whom this is required, that is ‘additional to and different from’ that provided within the differentiated curriculum and Quality First Teaching. There are four main areas of need identified in the SEN Code of Practice:
- Communication and Interaction
- Cognition and Learning
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health
- Sensory and/or Physical Needs
The vision and aims of the Learning Support department at Purbrook Park School has been influenced by the Purpose and Aims of the National Curriculum and the SEN Code of Practice. The teaching staff shares the responsibility and recognises supporting pupils with different learning needs. We work as a team with an attitude to provide a safe, secure and balanced environment that meets the requirements of all pupils who need extra support for their learning. At Purbrook Park School, all staff are responsible for setting suitable challenges. These include:
- Setting high expectations for every pupil
- Teachers plan lessons for pupils who have low levels of prior attainment or come from disadvantaged backgrounds
- Teachers use appropriate assessment to set targets which are deliberately ambitious
- All staff respond to pupils’ needs and overcoming potential barriers for individuals and groups of pupils
Our Learning Support team has a wealth of experience who provide both in class support and interventions. We provide an adaptive teaching classroom, some small group work, differentiated material, exam concessions, interventions catering to particular needs, in class support and a safe place for vulnerable pupils at break and lunch time to name but a few, providing a holistic attitude to a young person’s support.
The Director of Inclusion, SENCo and the SENCo Assistant liaise and work closely with a multitude of outside agencies to ensure the school are providing the best strategies to support the pupils with their different learning needs. They are always available to parents, they endeavour to make the transition from primary to secondary and on to college as uncomplicated as possible.
The Learning Support Department is successful at integrating pupils with a wide range of special educational needs into the education and social life of the school. Our accessibility plan (available in our policy download centre), explains how we are increasing the extent to which disabled pupils participate in our curriculum. All pupils are always encouraged and feel valued, happy active members of our school community. Our pupils' needs are always at the heart of our provision and decision-making.
