Personal Development Learning at Purbrook Park

The intention of personal development is to ensure the holistic development of pupils through exceptional learning opportunities and pastoral care every day. To develop and equip pupils with outstanding character through moral, intellectual, civic and performance virtues, to make a positive contribution to society.

Over-arching purpose and approach;

Our pupils will have enjoyed and immersed themselves in school life through their studies and wider opportunities provided for them. A Purbrook Park pupil can leave our school having gained the confidence and resilience to look after themselves and others. Our pupils will demonstrate knowledge, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values through diverse learning experiences. Pupils will hold strong moral beliefs for right and wrong and seek out social justice, valuing democracy and the rule of law to make the world a better place for themselves and the wider society. Pupils will acknowledge and embrace their own individuality and celebrate diversity in our school community, taking part in key awareness days activities and events that reflect life in Modern Britain and enrich their school experience. Pupils will be morally proud, intellectually curious, willing to volunteer, demonstrate key leadership skills and know how to build on their own performance in relation to their talents and skills and their own capabilities to excel in their achievements.

At Purbrook Park the Personal Development Framework promotes our key character virtues embedded throughout the curriculum and wider opportunities reflecting our school motto:

Cross-Curricular Learning; Science, PE, RS, Food Technology and Computer Science strongly support content addressed in Personal Development Learning. All subject areas have explicit links to SMSC learning and are encouraged to promote the character virtues within lessons.

Fortnightly assemblies will further strengthen the key messages explored in PDL. Year group assemblies provide pupils with career and college information, support transition to secondary school, celebrate pupils’ effort and achievement in all subject areas, raise exam revision profile and support PSHE learning.

After School Enrichment enhance and provide further opportunities for the Character virtues to be developed and explored. RSE, Careers and Basic First Aid Skills are further explored with each year group through our specialist drop down days.

Wider opportunities throughout school life include Children In Need fundraising, Duke of Edinburgh, School Diversity Week, Performing Arts performances, Sports Teams, NCS, Xmas Hamper Appeal, We Are One Expo and many more.
